U.S Women's Rugby On the Move
A historic day for women's sports has arrived with the Women's Professional Rugby League launching its first ever season. They have a total of six teams competing nation-wide in high stakes gameplay, that is a must watch.
The rise of this league builds on the momentum that the U.S Women's Olympic Team started last summer. They were able to bring home their first ever medal and inspire those seeking greatness in the sport. This helped provide a professional platform in the sport inside of the United States.
The six teams that make up the league are based in the following areas; New York, Boston, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco and Minneapolis. The league hopes to expand to more areas and create more teams as they gain popularity.
The vision of the league is to grow women's rugby as a sport and to strengthen the athletes as a whole in preparation for the World Cup and future summer Olympics. With the creation of this league, they are hoping to have a strong start in player development. Katherine Aversano, co-founder of Women's Elite Rugby, emphasized the importance of starting now: "If we want to develop a high-quality level of rugby in the United States, we need to get started now." The leagues success depends on the amount of fan support and community engagement. Fans will have to band together and support their teams by buying tickets, apparel, or other contributions towards the league. This effort would be a win for year one of a enthusiastic women's sports league.
